Civil Marriage Ceremonies in Italy
Civil wedding ceremonies in Italy must take place in a town hall or a property purchased by the local government for the purpose of marriages. In Venice, this building is the Palazzo Cavalli, which is absolutely beautiful -- a private palace used by the city expressly for weddings. It has spectacular vistas overlooking the Grand Canal and the Rialto Bridge, and it allows for the bride or bridal party to arrive in a gondola, according to the city’s tradition. Inside, the palace is entirely private and intimate, with antique Venetian furnishings, paintings, frescoes on the walls, and plenty of sunlight for photos.
Upon arrival, you are greeted by the Mayor or an official wearing a wide band in the colors of the Italian flag. He begins the marriage service, which consists of a mix between traditional vows and various articles pertaining to marriage, family, and the couple in general. It is not an “honor and obey” type of vow.
Our interpreters translate for you step by step. Then the vows and rings are exchanged, and the bride and groom and their witnesses sign documents. The civil ceremony can last up to 30 minutes. It is also possible to personalize the civil wedding ceremony by adding readings and vows you have chosen in addition to those legally required by the Italian government.
